Reading words

Terry has been finish reading his first story book from kindy under the Oxford Reading Tree program. He will bring back home each of the story book once completed reading it at school. I'm not sure whether he really can recognise reading the words or because of reading it everyday and eventually he memorised all even without looking at it.

Here are all the pages of his first storybook - Who Is It?. It contains simple words.

When I show him the book again and point out the different words separately, he not really can read it out. To improve his ability in recognising words, read and learn more new words, I digged out the Word card that I make way long ago to teach him read.

Each time I gave him 1 set of 10 new words. When he familiar with all and know how to read by himself, then I proceed with another set. So far as for now he can read and recognise up to 30+ single words. It is not that stress to teach him to read now as compare to last year when I wanted to start doing it. This 30+ words he actually learned it up in within a week time.

It was beyond my expected time for him to complete all. Words I introduced to him are those common words like we, see, like, car, up and etc..all are short words with up to 5 letters only.

Using flash card method to read words was actually inspired by submerryn. I'm so impress with Ethan's ability to read at very young age. I hope I'm not too late to teach him now and soon he can pick up any book and read it away.

good job Terry :) No, it's not too late to use the flash cards. I am still using them for Ashley. I notice that we have to do it frequently as the kid may forget after a while :(

It's never too late Judy. Terry is doing really well there.. Try forming sentences with the words. At least then he knows he is reading a sentence and THEN he'll discover that it actually makes sense! He'll enjoy it more :D

Terry is so smart. He has good memory. Gwen always forgets. Actually I haven't started teaching Gwen words. *lazy* I'm now inspired by you and Merryn.

Keep it up, Terry.

Just dropping by to say 'Hi'!

Good effort in cultivating your boy to read! I like word cards method too, I'm currently using Glenn Doman method to teach my 6 m.o. I think I'll try it on my 30 months old, though she doesn't quite like it.

Anyway, good reading program you have here! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Judy,

Every child has some special gift from God, there is no such thing or early or late (only my opinion),to me the most important thing for a child just to leave him a beautiful childhood.... give them happiness and loads of love, i can guarantee that, with that they can be as good as they can be,seriously....

God Bless, every child is special in HIS sight, dont you agree?

Well done Terry. I think the readers in the school has not cover enough new words for our kids, no harm we introduce more new words for them at home. The best thing is Terry can learn so fast at this moment, so do continue to train him.
