Eyelid bump

Last Saturday I discovered a small red bump on Terry's right eyelid. I can confirm right away it was an eye stye (眼挑针). A stye is an inflamed oil gland on the edge of your eyelid, where the lash meets the lid. It appears as a red, swollen bump that looks like a pimple.

I didn't consult his paed immediately. My experience with it was drinking herbal tea to cool down the body heat (which actually is not related to body heat at all!) and clean it with chrysanthemum tea. Since the boy never allow me to touch it, so I boiled Loh Hon Gou drink for him and the next day Chrysanthemum tea. The stye not really go small, instead after a loud cry and some rub on his eyes yesterday, the syte got more red and swollen.

So I'm not sure what to do next, today I brought him to paed after his school. Only know by then it was stye. He explained to me how it cause and advised me what I can do. The simple way to do was apply hot/warm towel on the stye eye for 5 minutes (2 times daily) then put on the cream, on 2 days or 2 weeks (it depends), it will bursts or drain on its own. Or, if can, may squeeze it out and it will be clear and recover fast. I don't really like latter way as it may hurt his eyeball. Doctor also advised that, if serious when it grows bigger, it may need to be removed surgically at eye specialist center, put him to sleep and clear it out which can cost a whopping of RM4k!

Prescribed eye cream and oral antibiotic

Back home, Terry never allow me to do that even during his nap. I've been disturbing his nap time at 2pm by clean and check the infected area. He continued his nap at 5.30pm. I tried to do my best to apply hot towel to speed rupture of the stye and aid in the relief of symptoms to allow it drain on its own.

Finger cross it is just a minor one and gone by its own. He got a big small eye now.

Holiday Homework

Every Friday right after fetching Terry back home, the first thing I did was open his school bag and fish out the Weekly Progress Report. I'm actually quite excited and very looking forward to read it every week to see what he has learn and what he did in school. I can tell you the feeling was just like revealing a wrapped gift...am I too much or overacted? haha..

Beside the report, sometime there will be some other separate notes, announcement for parents or party pack, art works and etc. Over the 1 week school holiday, for the first time he brought back an exercise book.

I thought it was a whole new blank book without any writing. Surprised me, he has actually done some writing work on it at school. I'm quite happy on what he able to write so far since he just able to grip the pencil correctly before CNY.

Here are part of it,

I laughed over it and Terry laugh with me too...and telling me those alphabets he wrote. It was just too cute. The last page was this revision homework on the alphabets l, t and i. 1 page only!

He was so eagar wanted to write when he saw it. While I'm serving the lunch, he started to write already and finish all before I start to feed him. These were all wrote by himself. I just help to rub off those not written correctly. He just got a bit difficult to dot the letter 'i'. After he done all, he kept wanted to rub off what he has wrote cause he find it so fun to write and rub.

That Friday lunch time, he enjoys writing very much. I even gave him some extra writing on blank sheet. The writing work occupied him till he finish the lunch.

Church VBS

Every year there will be twice VBS (Vocational Bible School) happening in our church falls on school holiday in March and December. This holiday program specially for kid's age between 4 to 12 years old to let them learn about God through stories.

This year, Terry is eligible to join. Since we got no other plan during the 1 week school holiday ago, I have registered him for this 3 days program falls on 18th-20th March. Since he familiar with the church and some other familiar faces, I think he should be ok to mix in. At the same time, I will be there all time to help out with the rest.

Days before the VBS, I told him about it and he was actually so excited and very looking forward to it. Knowing that he missed school very much, every morning he still tells me, "Mummy, go to school." So this VBS will be a great time to fill his longing to go to school rather than stay at home.

The VBS theme - 诚实神最爱 (Honest, God Favorite). Activities included singing, games, story telling and art & craft. The school hours is from 9am-5pm and the last day, 9am till 12.30pm, half day only then at night back for graduation ceremony. There were about 60+ kids joining. A small fee of RM30 charge for this program inclusive of 1 lunch and 1 snack.

Day 1 (18/3)
He was quite ok to join in the games, singing and art time. When comes to story time with puppets, he shows not much interest to it, it could be too difficult for his age to understand the story and he started to move around or stick with me. Others that he not able to follow are like team slogan and mnemonic chant to recite.

Game time - Passing rubber band with straw.

Circle game, with his best friend Jun Ping (in green) and Eunice.

Art time

Also, when toilet time and lunch time, he needs me a lot. He couldn't eat by himself and I got to feed him. He shows his tireness after lunch, awhile later have his milk, try to coax him to nap in a room but he don't want.

Group photo taken

There will be a short presentation time on stage at the graduation night, his group (age 4-7) will presenting a song - Honest Children. He knows how to sing but refused to join in to sing together and practise. So, I pull him off from it.

The song like this, rhythm of the song "London Bridge".

(1) Honest children *tell the truth,
tell the truth, tell the truth
Honest children tell the truth,
I am honest.

* verse (2) Do not steal
* verse (3) Do not cheat

He able to stay put till 5pm. Once we got into car, he knock off in 5 mins on the way back to my parent's home for dinner. Back home, I got to carry this tired boy down and he continue to sleep for another 2 hours and woke up for late dinner. He obviously still too tired and not much appetite to eat. When ask if he likes it and want to go again, he nodded. We slept right after back home at 10pm+.

Day 2 (19/3)
He behave so differently, keep looking for me and not join most of the activities. He only able to stay good during art time with me around.

The flower pot is simply so beautiful when put it together. We plan to stay half day only as he couldn't stay on for too long hour without a quality nap. After lunch at church, we back home at 2pm. He also knock off immediately before reach home. After some snack and milk, he continue his nap at 5pm.

Basically, VBS to him is only enjoy the art and game time.

Day 3 (20/3)
For not having him to stick with me during the activities time, he agreed that I'm away the church while he join the rest. I'm not following him into the hall, just stay outside in a room and watch him from the window. Once he reached he dump his bag aside and ran to queue up with his group. He can follow on the games and singing time. There was no story and art time, it was mainly a free time on last day. They also practise presentation and prepare for the night. Afternoon, back to my parent's home to rest and dinner.

At night, back to church for a simply yet fun graduation night.

Presentation time, minus Terry who refused to join

He got lots of fun time running with his good friend and receive his first cert, LOL! A light refreshment is serve after the ceremony.

Thats about his first time of joining VBS. In future, he will be all indepandant there by himself. There are kids teasing him that, mommy cannot follow one..haha..I'm sure he can learn more by then and able to join in for others.

Reading words

Terry has been finish reading his first story book from kindy under the Oxford Reading Tree program. He will bring back home each of the story book once completed reading it at school. I'm not sure whether he really can recognise reading the words or because of reading it everyday and eventually he memorised all even without looking at it.

Photobucket

Here are all the pages of his first storybook - Who Is It?. It contains simple words.

When I show him the book again and point out the different words separately, he not really can read it out. To improve his ability in recognising words, read and learn more new words, I digged out the Word card that I make way long ago to teach him read.

Each time I gave him 1 set of 10 new words. When he familiar with all and know how to read by himself, then I proceed with another set. So far as for now he can read and recognise up to 30+ single words. It is not that stress to teach him to read now as compare to last year when I wanted to start doing it. This 30+ words he actually learned it up in within a week time.

It was beyond my expected time for him to complete all. Words I introduced to him are those common words like we, see, like, car, up and etc..all are short words with up to 5 letters only.

Using flash card method to read words was actually inspired by submerryn. I'm so impress with Ethan's ability to read at very young age. I hope I'm not too late to teach him now and soon he can pick up any book and read it away.

CNY Group Visit at Peng Clan Association

It was an yearly CNY group visit at Peng Clan Association at their activity center in Cheras. This association having all Peng Clan members who carry surname of " " - Peng, Pang, Phang and etc...all Mr. Mrs Pang, Miss Pang, Madam Pang, Datuk Pang will gather together there to celebrate this day.

My FIL was the President of this association since few years ago. Every year family members and friends of Peng Clan member will be invited to join this party too. Hubby was not a registered member with them yet :P

Last Saturday (6th March), we went for it. It starts at 6.30pm. Due to heavy rain, we only manage to reached by 8pm. The programmes of the evening include lion dance, ang pao and mandarin orange distribution, karaoke, lucky draw and etc. For the food wise, they served Hakka dishes - "lui cha" and some other buffet foods.

Photobucket

Once we reach, the lion dance started shortly. It was Terry's first time watching the real lion dance besides from books and TV. It was not really that bad terrified him for the loud drum noise and 2 big head lions.

Photobucket

His expression

Far better than meeting Santa Claus, LOL! We both take turn to carry him to watch and sometime he hide his face from looking at the lion. I kept encourage him to watch by seeing a big group of kids surrounding the lion head without any fear.

The lion make greeting to the VIPs while passing them oranges. When I'm sorting out the pic, I only realised that I captured him.

Familiar face? He is Tan Sri Robert Phang, lately there were some news related to him with MCA Youth Chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong on PKFZ scandal. He is the Advisor of the Association.

Name of the main hall with FIL's last name.

A group pic (FIL in green batik)

After the lion dance and ang pao distribution, I only started to eat. Since late already the food left not much.

I somehow got click to a member Mrs. Pang there. Every year she was so looking forward to see me there. She (Su-San) a mother of 2 boys. We known since year 2008 on a very unfortunate day in hospital, when both of our son hit by burn.

We met at the same doctor's clinic, admit to the same hospital, did the burn operation on the same evening and also stay next to each other in the same room. Some medical staff was thought that this both young patients are "brother". Ya, can consider so, since they both have the same surname and the middle one too - "Pang Chee Xxxx". Her son that time was only a 8 months old baby, burned by hot iron at his right thumb when riding on walker. From there on later, we keep contact on the phone to check out our son well-being and recovery. Till now, we still have lots to share, especially on what to use on the scar for better recovery and the changes and fear in them after the accident. Hopefully soon we will catch up again.

Welcoming the Tiger Year (Day 9 to Day 15)

Comes to the last post about how I spend my CNY. Hopefully I'm not drag it too long or you will start get boring reading this.

22/2 (Monday) 初九
School start day, daddy resume work and so do my daily routine are back too. The boy having hard time to wake up after 1 whole week of break. But luckily he was not fuss when waking him up, he was actually so looking forward to go to school everyday.

23/2 (Tuesday) 初十
Attend a focus group discussion with Mummy Moon at my ex-company Synovate. For the first time being a respondent there I feel so excited. Manage to met some of my old colleagues and friends and say Hi to them. We were there to discuss about milk powder and this discussion was one of the project from Dutch Lady Friso Gold.

They served us a simply dinner (fried rice from La Manila) before the discussion start. There were 8 of us mummy there, who giving kids and baby Friso Gold milk. The discussion was speaking in Cantonese, thus I feel very comfortable to voice out my opinion fluently. We talked and discuss on many area about giving milk powder and baby. The whole section lasted for 2.5 hours and as a token of appreciate we were being paid for RM150. After this discussion I know a lot of things and how important of a good milk powder work on the kids.

Guess what, immediately on the next day (24/2) I switched Terry's milk powder back to Friso Gold after giving him 1 year on Abott Gain Plus Eye-Q. The biggest reason to change also because I don't see the milk powder works good in improving his immune system and appetite, especially after he starts going to school, he really fall sick very frequently. Terry was fully on Friso Gold milk since born till end of year 2008, when my FIL stop distributing Dutch Lady milk product that time, then only we decide to take other milk poweder. This was actually my first time to decide back what milk powder to give for the boy.
